Access to sanitation is a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG ) target aiming for both the elimination of open defecation and gaining universal access to safe sanitation to all household. Mozambique has one of the highest open defecation rates in sub-sharahn Africa. WHO and UNICEF are the lead UN agencies to assist the government to meet this target. The UNICEF has a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) program with a dedicated sanitation team. This sanitation team assist the government in up scaling access to sanitation by: (a.) project implementation of creating awareness at the community level and sanitation marketing, (b.) advocacy to raise the profile of sanitation with decision maker, (c.) assists the government in strategy development and (d.) innovations of new approaches, technologies and methods.
The sanitation team has currently two dedicated team members, and is supported by the capacity development senior as well as by the two provincial team members. This team is in need of support, and is looking for a new team member that can assist in the sanitation programming. The UNV will be this new team member, and will be directly supervised by the WASH specialist, responsible for the sanitation team. The UNV will also engage with the partner organisations, such as the government, NGOs and other organisations
It is expected that the UNV will assist with office related tasks related to the sanitation program. The UNV will assist the program with analysis of various programmatic documents, support contract management and administration, contribute to progress reporting, assist in case documentation, assist in the monitoring and evaluation of the program.
