Laboratory Manager Full-Time

About the Position

The Laboratory Manager will be based in ALS Inspection Mozambique (Maputo) and will report to the Regional Operations Manager. The Laboratory Manager (Inspection) will guide lab personnel to deliver their assigned duties within limited time and resources. In addition, the Laboratory Manager will be responsible for acquiring personnel, equipment, or necessary tools. Designing the workflow. Overseeing the daily operation of the lab. Ensure training of new lab personnel and compliance with relevant regulatory standards.

The position will be responsible for:

Compliance

• Practice the ALS Health and Safety Foundation Standards.
• Practice the ALS company core values.
• Abide by the ALS company policies and procedures.
• Follow all ALS Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) at all times.
• Abide by local legislative requirements at all times.
• Compliance to the ALS Quality Management System.
• Responsible for ensuring ALS quality protocols are adhered to and quality targets met at all times and in accordance with ISO17025 quality standards.
• Prepare and comply with internal as well as external audits for the region.

Operational Tasks

• Responsible for overall laboratory operations.
• Meeting OHSE and corporate compliance requirements.
• Work closely with the Regional Operations Manager SSA, for staff planning, performance management and trouble shooting.
• Achieving the budgeted financial targets and profitable growth for the laboratory while ensuring safety, compliance, quality and client satisfaction.
• Meeting defined Key Performance Index in Quality, Turnaround time and Efficiency.
• To ensure the smooth operation and investigation of any incidents within the laboratory.
• Supervise, mentor and coach the lab staff to ensure the production, and quality of sample preparation and analytical work meet the requirements.
• Train and develop the local supervisors and technical staff to operate the facility with the same quality and efficiency standards as the rest of the ALS labs.
• To conduct and complete the Performance Appraisals for all supervisors and make recommendations for appropriate salary adjustments under regional HR guidance.
• Ensure that analyses are done according to ALS documented procedures and standards.
• Responsible for organizing and management of smooth workflow through identified and timely adjusted operating structure and shift schedule.
• Provide oversight for the maintenance and established of QC programs and ISO accreditation preparation.
• Provide oversight for logging incident or accident, ensure investigation and closure of non-conformances in absence of QC personnel.
• Coordinate speedy resolution of client complaints/ queries.
• Coordinate method/ instrument validations and /or procedural review.
• Perform all other reasonable duties as determined by the Regional Operations Manager SSA.

Human Resources

• Plan and implement work schedules to maintain turnaround time.
• Review update and approve timesheets in accordance to work schedules.
• Ensure time and attendance in strict accordance with ALS policies for all staff in the area of responsibility i.e. timeous completion of monthly timesheets, appropriate leave planning, etc.
• Apply Company disciplinary code within the department as when necessary.
• Manage employee FTE ratings within the department to ensure compliance.
• Conduct and complete the performance management reviews for staff in department.
• Assist with the recruitment of direct line reports and facilitate all inter-departmental transfers and re-deployment.
• Train staff on departmental processes and SOP’s.

Requirements

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Minimum 5 years’ managerial experience in mining/mineral analytical laboratory environment.
• Minimum of a Chemistry/Science Diploma or Degree from a recognized University or Institution preferably a National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
• Fluent in English (written and oral) and Portuguese (preferably).
• Ability to anticipate needs and must be responsive to enquiries.
