Health Systems Analyst Full-Time

ThinkWell is an emerging health systems development organization that is currently in a major growth phase. While our core area of work is health financing, we take a health systems approach that includes human resources for health, health information systems, private sector engagement, and research and evaluation.

In Mozambique ThinkWell has a growing portfolio in health system strengthening, including a range of technical assistance in health financing, policy and planning, PFM, HRH management and PBI, operational research and evaluation for health systems, health policy and system research. We are a trusted partner to the MoH and we are working with various donors, including CDC, USAID, DFID, WHO.

We are looking for a Health Systems Analyst to provide direct technical assistance and analytical support across a range of ThinkWell projects and in various areas, including human resources for health, health financing, supply chain management.

The Health Systems Analyst has management experience in the health sector, preferably with both profit and non-for-profit entities. The candidate should have an established track record of carrying out analytical work and preparing high-quality technical reports and presentations, as well as defining and conducting research and evaluation. The candidate should have strong communication skills and be able to work independently and on global teams across the organization. The candidate should understand how to work effectively with field-based programs and staff who are in remote locations. Mozambican nationals are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Analyst will report to the Project Manager and support this person to manage a project team, as well as engage directly with the funder and with key stakeholders when needed. S/he will technically contribute to the implementation and monitoring of the current activities, as well as contribute to the ideation of new workstreams under the project and definition of new areas of work.

Location: Maputo, Mozambique with travels to the Provinces

Reports to: Country Director, Maputo, Mozambique.

• The Health Systems Analyst will lead and support a mix of activities, some individually and others as member of a team. Potential assignments include:

Technical Support

• Provide direct technical expertise, in selected areas of the program portfolio, including health financing, human resources for health, supply chain management, private sector involvement in the health system;
• Liaise with both national authorities and implementing partners to provide project updates;
• Conduct on-site evaluations in health facilities and medical warehouses, working with district and provincial health authorities;
• Participate in technical working groups and provide technical support to Ministry of Health as required by the projects;
• Participate in quantitative / qualitative analysis across areas of the program portfolio;
• Produce high quality written inputs to reports and presentations, including technical documents and project status reports in Portuguese and English; create graphics and visualizations of data for presentations and reports.

Management and New business

• Assist with a range of project management responsibilities, including managing deliverables and project timelines, project administration and representing the project team in external meetings;
• Liaise with external project counterparts and support co-creation of project design and deliverables;
• Contribute to business development, including by conducting desk research, providing technical input, and supporting proposal writing;
• Collaborate effectively with the Mozambique Country Office team to expand the organization’s portfolio in Mozambique.

Other tasks

• Provide thoughtful input across a range of ThinkWell projects in regard to product framing and presentation;
• Act as ThinkWell cultural liaison for incoming staff. Work with incoming analysts on ThinkWell approach, processes, and culture;
• Any other responsibilities assigned by supervisor or arising from the project priorities.

1. Educational background: Master’s degree in business, economics, health economics, public policy, or public health, and a keen understanding that degrees mean very little;
2. Experience: At least 5 years of relevant work experience in the health sector with at least 2 years’ experience in project management;
3. Experience collaborating with the Ministry of Health, donors and implementing partners strongly preferred;
4. Experience applying research techniques, qualitative and quantitative methods, strongly preferred;
5. Language: Excellent speaking and writing in English;
6. Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint required; proficiency in statistical analysis packages strongly preferred;
7. Travel: Ability and willingness to travel up in Mozambique to 30%.
