Mozambique due to its geographical location is exposed to frequent natural disasters including droughts, floods and cyclones which often have grim consequences on development gains. At the beginning of March 2019, the central and northern parts of the country were severely hit by heavy rains which flooded most of the cities. The flooding was further exacerbated by cyclone Idai which made landfall on March 15. More than 447 people have so far been confirmed dead. The scale of the damage, especially those resulting from the Tropical Cyclone Idai is still being assessed.
Overall, the two disasters have affected more than half of all provinces in Mozambique with Sofala, Zambezia and Manica being the worst affected. The cities of Beira, Dondo and Chomoio suffered the most devastating impact of both the floods and cyclone. Close to half a million people have lost shelter, food, water sources and their livelihoods. There is massive destruction of infrastructure including housing, schools, hospitals, roads, electricity and water grids, among others. Some of the rescued are housed in some 147 sites while at least 1 million children are yet to get united with their families. All the numbers are expected to rise in the coming days as more devastated areas become accessible.
