The Government of Mozambique in partnership with FAO, WFP and IFAD, with EU funding are implementing a joint Programme on “Accelerating Progress towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in Mozambique (MDG 1c)”. The overall objective of the program is to reduce by half the proportion of people suffering from hunger in Mozambique by 2018.
The FAO MDG1c Sub-programme addresses aspects that contribute to low agricultural productivity and food diversification; low family income and poverty; and the underlying causes of malnutrition, among other related aspects. Recognizing that limited access to high nutritional value foods coupled with a lack of knowledge of good food, nutrition, health and hygiene practices are among the key factors that contribute to high rates of chronic malnutrition, the FAO Sub-programme has a dedicated sub-component on “Nutrition Education and Home Gardens”. The objective of the sub-component is to contribute in a sustainable way towards addressing micronutrient deficiencies and the prevention of chronic malnutrition by increasing the production, availability and consumption of vegetables, fruits and chickens; and nutritional education and social behavior change communications for the promotion of appropriate healthy and nutritional behaviors and practices.
