Project Planning and Budgeting

Assist in project planning to ensure that agriculture activities are thoroughly incorporated:

• Participate in annual, quarterly and monthly planning meetings; ensure agriculture targets and activities are built into plans
• Provide feedback regarding budget for agriculture activities, identifying where savings may be made or where additional funding may be needed.
• Prepare monthly and weekly work-plan for approval by Agriculture and Livelihood Technical Coordinator
• Attend to annual, quarterly and monthly planning meetings; ensure agriculture targets and clear activities are built into plans.
• Provide feedback regarding budget for agriculture activities, identifying where savings may be made or where additional funding may be needed.

Project Implementation

Implement all agriculture activities within the district, according to the agreed work-plans:

• Promote the adoption of proven crop production techniques and practices, including improved storage, through practical demonstrations, training and field days
• Promote school gardens to schools as a key strategy of increasing home grown school feeding
• Provide production related information to the schools and farmers to assist them to solve specific problems in field
• In collaboration with research partners, lead the establishment of field trials and demonstrations of new technologies (e.g. new seed varieties, improved practices), including monitoring and the collection of data for analysis.
• Promote other best practices in sustainable natural resources management that contribute to soil fertility and erosion control, including use of agro-forestry plants, and contour-planting.

Capacity Building

Actively seek to build the capacity of agriculture groups for greater sustainability:

• Review the existing capacity of farmers groups, both from a technical and organisational perspective; identify capacity gaps and make plans to address these.
• Review existing training materials; adapt or revise these as necessary to enable agriculture groups to more readily benefit from these; deliver training to agriculture groups as appropriate.
• Link agriculture groups to other sources of support that can enable them to further build their capacity.
• Identify existing capacity of farmers groups, both from a technical and organisational perspective; identify capacity gaps and make plans to address these.
• Review/improve existing training materials; adapt or revise these as necessary to enable agriculture groups to more readily benefit from these; deliver training to agriculture groups as appropriate.

Liaison and Representation

Facilitate effective working relationships with government and other organisations in the district within the area of agriculture:

• Work with the WV Agriculture and Livelihood Technical Coordinator to ensure consistent communication to district agriculture authorities; ensure they are aware of and supportive of WV’s plans.
• Co-ordinate with other organisations working in agriculture in the district to ensure complementarity of approaches.
• Attend meetings with local government as requested by the District Technical Manager.

Reporting

Provide key project reports on a regular basis:

• Submit monthly activity report to Agriculture and Livelihood Technical Coordinator and to District Technical Manager.
• Provide data on agriculture progress for 6-monthly and annual reports to the donor.

Required Professional Experience

• Three 3 Years relevant experience, including working in community development or agriculture.
• Experience in capacity building of community groups.
• Experience on developing saving groups.

Required Education, training, license, registration, and certification.

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area such as agriculture or agronomy.
• Knowledge on improved agricultural techniques and processes.
• Experience on seed multiplication.

Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications

• Strong planning and organisational skills.
• Ability to communicate complicated technical issues in a simple manner that can be understood by non-technical people and to provide ongoing coaching in these areas.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including main language of area of assignment, and Portuguese; English is an asset but not essential.
• Computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel, or other similar software.
• Motorbike’s license/ability to ride it.
